What's up with the word "FREE"

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that somehow the word "free" isn't what I thought it meant? I cannot begin to count how many times in just the past month that I have been trying to get my website advertised on all these so called free spots that I came across either something like this: "Free to paid members" What is that???? If you have to pay to be a member of something, where does the free come in? Or how about when this happens: You go all the way through registering, putting in every little detail about your site or products, THEN at the conclusion of the next page it says something to the effect of, pay so much a month, lifetime membership is so much, or my favorite one is: enter your credit card number or pay pal account and you will be billed only once. FREE!!!!!! HA, somebody better check their dictionary for the meaning of this word.
